Gypsies on the beach
at South Shields

Ralph Hedley waited until his woodcarving firm was established before he turned to painting. This is early example of his work even though it was painted when he was 28.

It shows a ragged tent pitched above the high tide mark, with a woman cooking a meal in a frying pan on a brazier. Her baby is on her knee and a white pug dog sleeps at her feet.
