The old kitchen
In the 1890s Ralph Hedley’s painting style was more fluid, and he was able to capture subtle effects of lighting. In The old kitchen he experiments with the effects of light falling across rough surfaces in the sort of cottage interior he was well-known for painting.
A previously untraced picture thought to be The cheese press, (1908_w023) came to auction in Scandinavia recently, and the cottage background bears a striking resemblance to The old kitchen.
