Passing the doctor

Young recruits, probably for the Northumberland Fusiliers, queue up for their medical check.

When Passing the doctor was shown at the Royal Academy, London, in 1897, a doctor wrote to the medical magazine The Lancet, saying:

“With the exception of the fact that the doctor has his stethoscope at an angle at which we are sure he could not hear anything, the picture is good”.
