Sharpening the scythe
Late summer, and the sun was high in the sky when Ralph Hedley sketched this man using a carborundum stick to put an edge on the blade. His brushstrokes were so lively and rapid that they look like scribbles where they represent cut stalks of grass.
Hedley later used the subject of the scythe in By the wayside, (1899-W002a), shown at the Royal Academy exhibition of 1899 (608)
