The potato heap

Potatoes were stored over the winter in heaps in the fields, covered with straw to protect them from the frost. Hedley’s painting shows women working in wintry sunlight, sorting potatoes into shallow baskets and tipping them into sacks. In the background a man arranges the sacks on a cart.
