Crossing Hylton ferry

Ralph Hedley often painted activity on the river Wear at Hylton, near Sunderland.  Some of these pictures are bright and sunny, but more show Hylton and its ferry on gloomy days.

Crossing Hylton ferry (1912) is particularly bleak. It shows a family moving house in the grey light of dawn, with all their belongings piled high on a cart. It may have been on a quarter day, when accounts are settled . . .
